The IBM 44V3481 is a 574F auxiliary write cache I/O adapter providing 1.5GB of compressed auxiliary write cache, supplied under feature codes 5583 and 5590 for System i 9406 machines. It is paired with a RAID disk controller and exists to hold a second copy of the controller’s write cache, so that data accepted from the host but not yet on disk survives a controller failure. That protection is what allows the controller to acknowledge writes early, which is where the performance gain with fast disks comes from. It is cross-referenced with part 42R5133.
