The IBM 73Y9589 is a bulk power distribution assembly, listed on our record as BPDY. It sits between the bulk power regulators and the rest of the frame, routing regulated DC to the cages and drawers that need it. Like the other units in an IBM frame power subsystem it is hot pluggable and installed with redundancy, so a failure is repaired rather than causing an outage. The correct assembly depends on the machine type and on how the frame is populated.

Machines of this class are maintained at field replaceable unit level. A frame holds a central electronics complex of processor books and memory, I/O drawers carrying the channel and network adapters, a bulk power subsystem and its own cooling. Engineers replace the failing unit rather than the machine, which is why individual assemblies from the z9, z10, z196 and zEC12 generations and their equivalent Power frames still trade actively years after those systems shipped.
