The Marconi Ericsson 1HAM60698AAP is recorded as an optical line termination unit carrying the marking VCTS. The optical LTU part is clear enough: it is the board that terminates a fibre tributary on the multiplexer. What VCTS stands for is not something we have found in any published Marconi material, so we are leaving it as the marking it is rather than expanding it into something that sounds right. The Marconi Ericsson branding dates the item to after the 2006 sale of Marconi’s telecoms business.

Marconi’s SMA range, inherited from GPT and Plessey, was the SDH multiplexer family that carried a large share of the UK network through the 1990s and beyond. An SMA node is a subrack of plug-in units: line termination units at 2, 34, 45 and 140 or 155 Mbit/s, optical STM-1 and STM-16 interfaces, a system controller, alarm and management cards and the power feeds. Marconi’s collapse in 2006 ended factory support, so every remaining site runs on secondary market stock.
