The Avaya VCM4 is a 4-channel Voice Compression Module, fitted internally as a daughter card inside an Avaya IP Office 403, 406 or 412 control unit to add VoIP capability to the system. Each of its four channels compresses and decompresses voice traffic for one simultaneous IP trunk call or IP extension call, so the card is what actually lets the control unit carry calls over SIP trunks or to IP deskphones rather than only conventional analogue or digital extensions. It is a like-for-like replacement or capacity-expansion card for an existing IP403/406/412 control unit.
