The Ciena 130-0122-905 is a MultiWave remodulator. A remodulator takes an incoming client signal at a standard wavelength and retransmits it on the precise wavelength allocated to one WDM channel, which is how ordinary equipment gets onto a dense wavelength division system without being replaced. Remodulators are channel specific, so the part number and its suffix determine which wavelength the card will produce.

Ciena’s MultiWave systems were among the first commercial dense wavelength division multiplexing platforms, putting many optical channels down a single fibre pair at a time when the alternative was laying more glass. A terminal is built from per-channel transmitters, receivers and remodulators, plus optical amplifiers, multiplexers and the shelf control and power hardware. Channel cards are wavelength specific, so the exact part number identifies which channel a unit is built for.
