The Marconi/Nokia T30430.01 is the Synfonet STM-16 node subrack, catalogued in Nokia listings as the 17 slot shelf and offered elsewhere as the STM-16 node cabinet. It is the mechanical and backplane assembly the STM-16 plug-in units sit in, providing the slots, the backplane connections and the mounting for a node at the top capacity the platform supports. A subrack is not a like for like substitution across generations, so the code matters as much as it does for a card.

Synfonet was Nokia’s SDH transport range, sold on to Marconi in 1999 together with the Cambridge development team behind it. A node is assembled slot by slot from a subrack of plug-in units: STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 optical interfaces, 2 Mbit/s and 34/45 Mbit/s electrical tributary units, a control and timing unit, service and management interfaces, power supply assemblies and shelf mechanics. It behaves as both an add and drop multiplexer and a small cross connect, which is why it stayed in service on utility, transport and private network rings long after the public network moved on.
