Marconi/Nokia T30177.01 Nokia Synfonet / Marconi SDH transmission Optical Transmission Module

The Marconi/Nokia T30177.01 is the Synfonet SMI-ST service and management interface unit. Cards of this type give the shelf its management path and its service functions: local craft terminal access, alarm collection and the housekeeping interfaces an operator needs to commission and monitor the node. Every Synfonet shelf needs one, which makes it a card that sites tend to hold as a spare rather than order reactively.

Synfonet was Nokia’s SDH transport range, sold on to Marconi in 1999 together with the Cambridge development team behind it. A node is assembled slot by slot from a subrack of plug-in units: STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 optical interfaces, 2 Mbit/s and 34/45 Mbit/s electrical tributary units, a control and timing unit, service and management interfaces, power supply assemblies and shelf mechanics. It behaves as both an add and drop multiplexer and a small cross connect, which is why it stayed in service on utility, transport and private network rings long after the public network moved on.
