The Marconi/Nokia T30054.01 is catalogued as the Synfonet SSW-A card. That much is confirmed by Nokia parts listings, and it places the unit firmly inside the Synfonet shelf rather than anywhere else in the Nokia range. What we cannot honestly give you is what SSW stands for, because the expansion was internal to Nokia and does not appear in any published material we can stand behind. We would rather say that than invent a plausible sounding function for it.

Synfonet was Nokia’s SDH transport range, sold on to Marconi in 1999 together with the Cambridge development team behind it. A node is assembled slot by slot from a subrack of plug-in units: STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 optical interfaces, 2 Mbit/s and 34/45 Mbit/s electrical tributary units, a control and timing unit, service and management interfaces, power supply assemblies and shelf mechanics. It behaves as both an add and drop multiplexer and a small cross connect, which is why it stayed in service on utility, transport and private network rings long after the public network moved on.
