The Mitel MC312AA is an SX-2000 peripheral switch controller card. It provides the control and switching for a peripheral switch unit and the twelve peripheral interface cards fitted behind it, which is the layer between the SX-2000’s central control and the line and trunk cards that actually terminate circuits. Without a working controller the whole peripheral shelf is out of service rather than just one card, which is why sites hold spares of this board in particular.

SX-2000 systems are still running in a shrinking number of sites, and they are kept alive card by card. The architecture puts a control node at the centre with peripheral cabinets hanging off it, each cabinet holding a switch controller and a bank of interface cards for extensions, analogue and digital trunks. The two letter suffix on a Mitel card code marks the issue level, and issues within one base code are not always drop-in equivalents, so the full code is what we match against.
