The 3Com 3C16610 is a SuperStack II Dual Speed Hub 500, an autosensing 10/100Mbps Ethernet hub from the 3Com SuperStack II range. Dual-speed hubs let 10Mbps and 100Mbps devices share the same unit by internally segmenting ports into separate 10Mbps and 100Mbps collision domains bridged together, a common transitional technology as networks migrated from 10Mbps to Fast Ethernet without requiring every attached device to be upgraded at once. It predates 3Com’s move to switched-only SuperStack 3 products and remains representative of the mixed-speed hub/switch networks common through the late 1990s. SuperStack II equipment of this generation remains in service in a number of established legacy SME networks, and a genuine spare such as this restores connectivity after a unit failure.
