The Nortel DS1404038-E5 is an Accelar 8608GB switch module, an 8-port 1000Base-SX GBIC Gigabit Ethernet interface for Nortel’s Accelar 8000-series chassis switch, the predecessor platform to the later Passport/Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 family sharing the same DS140x module numbering. It provides eight fibre Gigabit uplink or aggregation ports via GBIC transceivers, fitting into the chassis’s modular backplane alongside other I/O and switch-fabric modules.

Accelar 8000-series switches are Nortel’s earlier-generation carrier-class Layer 2/3 chassis switches, and their installed base was largely carried forward onto the compatible Passport/ERS 8600 chassis as sites upgraded. Installations on this platform remain in service across a number of established networks, and genuine spares such as this one are a routine requirement for maintaining full uplink capacity or replacing a failed module.
