It is purpose-built for extending SAN fabrics over distance rather than for local fabric switching alone.

The FCIP tunnelling capability lets organisations link Fibre Channel SANs across sites that would be impractical or costly to connect with native FC links, supporting remote data replication, backup and business continuity.
