The IBM 41T8120 is a motor drive assembly, recorded here as MDA_WCU. Cooling in an IBM frame is driven rather than passive: blowers and pumps are fed by motor drive assemblies that supply and control them, so that air or coolant flow can be varied with load and monitored by the service processor. Drive assemblies are specific to the cooling arrangement of the machine they came from. Confirm the machine type and model before ordering.

Machines of this class are maintained at field replaceable unit level. A frame holds a central electronics complex of processor books and memory, I/O drawers carrying the channel and network adapters, a bulk power subsystem and its own cooling. Engineers replace the failing unit rather than the machine, which is why individual assemblies from the z9, z10, z196 and zEC12 generations and their equivalent Power frames still trade actively years after those systems shipped.
