The IBM 42R5143 is recorded as a wrap plug associated with IBM feature code 5785, the 4 Port Async EIA-232 PCIe adapter. A wrap plug is a loopback connector: it ties an adapter’s transmit lines back to its receive lines so that diagnostics can test the port and its driver circuitry without anything attached at the far end. IBM ships them with the adapters they belong to and lists them as spares, because a missing wrap plug stops an engineer completing a port test.
