The IBM 80P2780 is an Ultra320 SCSI 4-pack disk drive backplane, CCIN 28D2, feature code 6574. It provides four hot-swap Ultra320 SCSI drive bays with the wiring and connectors needed to present each bay to the system’s SCSI controller, fitted to pSeries systems including the 7038-6X3 and 9111-520. This is a mechanical/electrical carrier rather than a controller in its own right, and it is installed as a unit rather than repaired, so a failed backplane is normally replaced whole. Genuine backplanes of this kind are a routine requirement for restoring full internal disk capacity, adding drive bays to an existing chassis, or replacing a backplane damaged during a drive swap.
