The Juniper Networks RE-1600-2048-S-D is a Routing Engine module for M-series, MX-series and T-series routers running Junos OS. The Routing Engine is the control-plane processor for the chassis: it runs routing protocol processes, builds and maintains the forwarding tables that are pushed down to the Packet Forwarding Engine, and provides system management functions including the console, auxiliary and out-of-band management ports. It is a hot-pluggable field-replaceable unit that installs into a dedicated Routing Engine slot, and on chassis that support dual Routing Engines a second module can run alongside it for graceful Routing Engine switchover and reduced control-plane downtime.
