The Nortel NTNQ48AA is a four-port E1 AAL1 Function Processor (FP) module for the Nortel Passport multiservice switching platform. It provides E1 circuit termination with ATM Adaptation Layer 1 (AAL1) support, used to carry TDM traffic across an ATM network.

Fitted into a Passport chassis, the NTNQ48AA terminates four E1 trunks and adapts them for AAL1 circuit emulation over the switch’s ATM fabric, allowing legacy TDM voice or data circuits to be carried across a Passport-based ATM/multiservice network. Like other Passport function processors, it is a field-replaceable interface card.

Passport switches were widely deployed by carriers for combined ATM, Frame Relay and IP multiservice switching, often bridging TDM access networks onto packet/cell cores.
