The IBM 31P1737 is an 8Gb Fibre Channel port-level component for machine type 2421, IBM’s System Storage DS8870 enterprise disk system. The DS8870 succeeded the DS8800 in IBM’s DS8000 line, carrying forward the same dual-processor-complex, host-adapter and device-adapter architecture with enhanced resiliency and Easy Tier capabilities.

IBM’s DS8000 family, including the DS8870, remains widely deployed in enterprise storage estates that have not migrated to a newer platform, and genuine port-level spares are a routine requirement for restoring full Fibre Channel connectivity after a failure.
