The IBM 41T8177 is a distributed converter assembly, marked DCA_GRY on the supplier record. DCAs are the local DC to DC power stages inside IBM System z and large Power frames, taking the regulated bulk supply and producing the voltages required at a specific book, cage or I/O drawer. They are hot pluggable and installed in redundant sets so that a single failure does not bring the drawer down. Fit is tied to the drawer and machine type rather than being universal.

Machines of this class are maintained at field replaceable unit level. A frame holds a central electronics complex of processor books and memory, I/O drawers carrying the channel and network adapters, a bulk power subsystem and its own cooling. Engineers replace the failing unit rather than the machine, which is why individual assemblies from the z9, z10, z196 and zEC12 generations and their equivalent Power frames still trade actively years after those systems shipped.
