The IBM 45D6677 is a BPR, the bulk power regulator used in IBM System z frames and the equivalent high end Power servers, catalogued here as BPR. It takes the incoming supply and produces the regulated bulk DC that the frame then distributes to its converter assemblies. Regulators are added in step with the amount of hardware a frame carries, and machines are populated with a spare so that one failing unit is a repair rather than an outage. Machines of this class are maintained at field replaceable unit level. A frame holds a central electronics complex of processor books and memory, I/O drawers carrying the channel and network adapters, a bulk power subsystem and its own cooling. Engineers replace the failing unit rather than the machine, which is why individual assemblies from the z9, z10, z196 and zEC12 generations and their equivalent Power frames still trade actively years after those systems shipped.
