The IBM 46C9091 is a four-bay backplane for 2.5 inch small form factor SAS drives, used in the System x3550 M4 and also fitted in the x3650 M4. The backplane is what the drive carriers plug into, carrying SAS signalling and power to each bay and presenting them to the controller, so the number of bays a server offers is set by which backplane is installed rather than by the chassis alone.
