The IBM 80P4904 is a RIO-2 (Remote I/O) loop adapter, cross-referenced to feature codes 6431 and 6438, used across IBM’s pSeries, iSeries and Power Systems ranges of this generation. RIO-2 loop adapters attach remote I/O drawers to the main system unit over a dedicated high-speed loop, letting a base system be expanded with additional PCI or PCI-X I/O drawers well beyond what its own chassis can hold, with up to six drawers supported on a single loop depending on the host platform.

Systems built around RIO-2 expansion remain in service in a number of established enterprise environments, and a genuine loop adapter is a routine requirement for restoring connectivity to an attached I/O drawer after an adapter failure.
