The Alcatel Lucent 3AL36516BA is an STM-16 aggregate card, recorded on the supplier data as an S16.1 enhanced build. In an SDH multiplexer the aggregate card is the high speed side of the node: it carries the 2.5 Gbit/s line signal in and out of the shelf while the tributary cards present the lower rate circuits. S-16.1 is the standard short haul optical classification for STM-16, giving a nominal reach of around 15 km on single mode fibre.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 1660 SM and its siblings in the optical multi-service node range combine SDH transport with packet switching in one shelf. A node is built from a matrix card that performs cross connection and synchronisation, plus port cards providing E1, E3, T3, STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 interfaces, and the shelf controller and power feeds behind them. The 3AL numbering runs across the whole family, which is why the exact code rather than the card name is what identifies a unit.
