The Compaq 288908-B21 is a 100Base-FX uplink module with SC connectors for the Netelligent 5226A switch. It fits the switch’s expansion slot and provides a fibre uplink in place of a copper port, converting the switch’s backbone connection to multimode optical so it can reach a distribution switch or another wiring closet beyond the 100 metre limit that constrains twisted pair. Fibre uplinks were also specified where the run crossed between buildings or passed through electrically noisy plant, since optical cable carries no ground reference and is immune to induced interference. The module is specific to the Netelligent 5226A chassis and is not interchangeable with the media modules used by the 3300-series hubs.
