The Chase Research IOLAN+8 is an eight-port IOLAN+ communications server, a TCP/IP terminal server that connects serial devices directly to an Ethernet network.
Each of its eight RS-232 serial lines runs at up to 115.2 kbps with full modem control (DTR, DSR, CTS, RTS and DCD). On the network side it has auto-sensing 10BASE-T, 10BASE2 and AUI Ethernet interfaces, and it runs from an auto-sensing internal power supply. Firmware is held in flash memory, so it can be updated without changing hardware.
The server handles Telnet and rlogin sessions, PPP, SLIP and CSLIP remote access, and printing through LPD and rcp. Typical uses are terminals on multi-user Unix hosts, dial-in modems, serial printers, point-of-sale equipment and console access to older equipment. It is set up from a menu interface with on-screen help, and a command line is also available.
Chase Research built the IOLAN range until Perle Systems took it over in 2000. Tech-Star supplies the IOLAN+8 refurbished for sites that still run serial equipment through these servers.
