The 3Com 3C16987A is a SuperStack 3 Switch 3300 SM, a fixed-configuration Layer 2 Ethernet switch with 24 autosensing 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 ports and a single 1000BASE-SX MT-RJ fibre uplink port for backbone connectivity. It offers a switching capacity of 2.8 Gbps and a forwarding rate of 1.3 million packets per second, with a 16K-entry MAC address table.

The switch uses a Matrix connector to stack up to four 3300 units into a single 96-port virtual switch, and it stacks with earlier SuperStack II units for investment protection on sites upgrading in stages. Management is available through a web-based interface, embedded RMON and SNMP, or 3Com Network Supervisor software, with support for IGMPv2 snooping, IEEE 802.1D spanning tree, 802.1p prioritisation and resilient links. It is a 1U rackmount unit with an optional redundant power supply.
