The Nokia C109452 is an NP8S1 Interface Plug-In Unit (PIU) for Nokia SDH transmission equipment, providing 8x STM-1 and 2x STM-4 optical interface ports on a single card. As an interface PIU, it handles the physical optical connections between the SDH network element and the fibre-optic transport network, converting and interfacing the electrical signals inside the chassis to the optical STM-1 (155Mbps) and STM-4 (622Mbps) line rates used to carry aggregated traffic between network sites. The combination of 8 STM-1 and 2 STM-4 ports on one card makes it well suited to nodes that need a mix of lower and higher-rate SDH interfaces, such as access or aggregation points feeding traffic up into a higher-capacity ring or hub. As a genuine Nokia part, it is built to slot directly into a compatible Nokia SDH chassis. Nokia SDH transmission platforms remain in service across many established telecoms networks, and genuine interface PIUs such as this one are a routine requirement for maintaining full port capacity, restoring redundancy after a card failure, or expanding an existing network element.
