The 3Com 3C16942A is a SuperStack II Switch 3000 with 12 ports of 100Base-TX, a standalone Fast Ethernet switch from the SuperStack II range predating the SuperStack 3 generation. It provided dedicated 100Mbps switched bandwidth to up to 12 connected devices, positioned as a workgroup or small-backbone switch at a time when many networks were still mixing 10Mbps hub segments with 100Mbps switched links. The SuperStack II Switch 3000 family was one of 3Com’s mainstream late-1990s switching platforms, predecessor to the SuperStack 3 switch ranges that followed it. 3Com equipment of this generation remains in service in a number of established legacy SME networks, and a genuine spare such as this restores switching capacity after a unit failure.
