The Nortel NTFN18AC is a Passport ILS Forwarder function processor. On a Nortel Passport/MSS packet-switching node, a function processor pairs a processor with the physical interface for one service type; the ILS Forwarder variant handles inter-network link server forwarding traffic between nodes rather than a customer-facing tributary interface.

Passport and the wider MSS family were Nortel’s multiservice switching platforms, carrying X.25, frame relay, ATM and later IP services for carriers and large enterprises, with a node built from a mix of function processors, control processors and the shelf that carries them. Passport nodes remain in service on a number of established carrier networks, and genuine spares such as this one are a routine requirement for maintaining full node capacity or restoring redundancy after a card failure.
