The Nortel NTRX50GN is an MFIO controller for the Nortel DMS-100 SDM (Supernode Data Manager), configured with a 4mm DAT tape drive and a 4GB disk drive. MFIO provides the maintenance file input/output function for the SDM: loading software, storing office data and taking backups from tape and disk media local to the switch.

DMS-100 is a large-scale carrier-grade digital switching exchange, and the SDM is its administrative and maintenance computing subsystem, built from a set of controller, disk and tape modules rather than telephony line/trunk cards. DMS-100 exchanges remain in service in a number of established telecoms networks, and genuine spares such as this one are a routine requirement for maintaining SDM redundancy or restoring a failed controller.
