Nortel DS1404014 (telecommunications transmission and networking portfolio) Datacentre Switch

The Nortel DS1404014 is a Passport 8190SM Switch Management Module, the dedicated management-plane card for the Passport 8000 series Edge Switch chassis. It carries the on-board CPU that handles switch administration, configuration and control-plane functions for the 8100-series Edge Switch Modules fitted in the same chassis, and Nortel’s design calls for exactly one Switch Management Module per Passport 8000 Edge Switch: it is not an optional add-on but a required component for the chassis to operate. The Passport/Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 platform was Nortel’s flagship modular chassis switch for enterprise and carrier-edge deployments, and remains in service in a number of long-lived network cores where the investment in the chassis and its line cards has outlasted the original support contract. A failed or ageing Switch Management Module is one of the few single points of failure in an otherwise redundant chassis design, so genuine replacements are a routine requirement for keeping an existing 8000-series installation fully operational rather than facing a full chassis replacement.
