The Nortel EB1639130E5 is an NSF Director 5016, the management and switching component of the Nortel Switched Firewall (NSF) product line. The NSF Director combines Nortel’s Alteon application-switching hardware with firewall software running on integrated firewall modules, load-balancing and directing traffic across the firewall cluster so the whole system can scale beyond a single firewall’s throughput. The Switched Firewall line sat alongside Nortel’s other Alteon-derived application-switching products before the Alteon business itself was sold on in 2009, and surviving NSF Director units are typically kept running as part of an established perimeter-security deployment.
