The Nortel ASN is a Bay Networks Access Stack Node, a compact multiprotocol router from the Bay Networks router family that Nortel inherited through its 1998 acquisition of Bay Networks. The Access Stack Node sat at the smaller, branch-office end of the same router range as the larger Backbone Link Node (BLN) and Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN), running the same BayRS routing software across Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, WAN and ATM interfaces so that a network built on the larger chassis could extend consistent routing out to smaller sites. These routers were legacy networking equipment even by the time Nortel absorbed Bay Networks, and surviving units are typically kept running to avoid disturbing a stable, long-installed WAN edge.
