The HP NC1020 is a single-port Gigabit Ethernet server network adapter on a standard PCI (not PCI-X or PCIe) card, an older-generation HP/Compaq NIC for servers whose motherboards only offer legacy 32-bit/33MHz or 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots rather than the PCI-X or PCIe slots found on later ProLiant generations. It gives an older server a Gigabit Ethernet port where the built-in NIC has failed, only supports 10/100 speeds, or is already in use for another network segment. Because it uses the plain PCI bus rather than PCI-X, it is specifically for the oldest tier of PCI-slot servers and workstations still in service, and will not fit a PCI-X-only or PCIe-only chassis.
