The IBM 22R4912 is recorded as a host adapter in a short wave form. On an IBM enterprise storage system the host adapters are the cards that face the storage network, presenting the Fibre Channel or FICON ports through which servers reach the disk behind them. Short wave optics run over multimode fibre at data centre distances, as against long wave optics on single mode fibre for longer runs, so the wavelength has to match the cabling and the switch ports already installed.
