The IBM 74Y9189 is a low-voltage 150W processor voltage regulator module (VRM), CCIN 51CE, for the POWER7 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6C and 8205-E6D server models. It converts the system’s main supply voltage down to the lower, tightly regulated voltage the processor module runs on, fitted close to the processor socket it serves so that voltage delivery stays within tolerance under load.

A VRM is a common failure point on POWER7-generation servers because it runs hot and switches continuously, and its failure symptoms (a processor that will not power on, or a system that reports a processor fault) can look like a CPU failure even though the processor card itself is fine. Activation features EPC5, EPC6 and EPC7 on these host models are processor core-activation entitlements, not separate hardware variants of this VRM.
