The IBM 31P1070 is recorded as a device adapter for IBM storage hardware. In an enterprise storage frame the device adapters are the cards on the back end: where host adapters face the servers, device adapters drive the disk enclosures, handling the links out to the drives and the RAID work behind them. They are installed in pairs so that every enclosure has two paths to it.
