The IBM 45W8715 is the paired 8Gb Fibre Channel ECM (Enclosure Controller Module) that runs alongside 45W8714 in a DS8000ECM assembly, again built on an Emulex 4-port Fibre Channel host bus adapter with SFP+ ports. Running the two modules as a matched set gives the DS8000 frame’s 2107-D02-class controller redundant front-end host paths, so a single controller failure does not interrupt host access to storage. DS8000 controllers of this generation remain in active service supporting established enterprise storage estates. Specifiers should confirm both modules are matched to the same microcode level before replacing either one, since mismatched firmware between a controller pair can cause failover issues.
