The Sun 540-6611-01 is a 73GB 10,000 RPM SAS hard drive in the 2.5 inch small form factor, supplied on the Sun hot plug carrier that lets it be exchanged without powering down the host. The interface is 3Gb/s SAS with a 16MB buffer.

Sun fitted drives of this class across the SPARC Enterprise and Sun Fire ranges as boot and system disks, where the small form factor allowed more spindles in the same chassis depth and the carrier made the drive a field replaceable unit. Two points to check when sourcing one: carrier design differs between server families, and Solaris and the onboard controllers expect the Sun firmware revision, so a bare drive of the same capacity from another vendor is not a straight substitute.

Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle in 2010, and parts of this generation carry the original Sun marking and part numbering.
