The 3Com Wireless LAN Managed Access Point 3850 (3CRWX385075A), the AP3850, is a dual-radio controller-managed access point running 802.11b/g and 802.11a simultaneously rather than switching between them. Like the 3750, it is designed to be managed centrally by a 3Com Wireless LAN Controller (WX2200, WX1200 or WXR100) and 3Com Wireless Switch Manager software rather than configured as a standalone device.

Running both radios at once lets the AP3850 serve 2.4GHz and 5GHz clients concurrently from a single mounting point, effectively doubling the wireless capacity available compared with a single-radio access point in the same location. It is powered entirely over Ethernet via PoE, removing the need for a local AC supply, and its distributed forwarding architecture reduces latency as the network scales.
