IBM 22L3336: Fibre Channel shortwave optical GBIC, 1000Base-SX.

The IBM 22L3336 is a Fibre Channel shortwave optical GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter), part of the same shortwave optical converter family as IBM 23L3336, 23L3337 and 21H9870 modules. It supports 1Gbps Fibre Channel (1000BASE-SX) transmission over short-wave multi-mode fibre using a duplex SC connector, giving a typical reach of up to around 500 metres depending on fibre grade. GBIC-format transceivers of this type were the standard hot-pluggable optical interface for IBM early Fibre Channel switches and host bus adapters before the industry moved to the smaller SFP form factor. GBICs of this generation remain a routine consumable for maintaining legacy Fibre Channel SAN fabrics that are still in service, replaced individually as ports fail or are brought back into use. Specifiers should confirm the exact host port type and fibre distance requirement against their specific SAN equipment before ordering.
