The IBM 31P1798 is a 4-port 8Gb Fibre Channel device adapter for the IBM System Storage DS8700 enterprise disk system. Device adapters sit on the back end of the DS8000 family’s storage controller, driving the links out to the disk enclosures and handling the RAID processing behind them, and are always installed in matched pairs so every enclosure keeps two independent paths to the controller. It shares its 4-port 8Gb design with the closely related part numbers 31P1793 and 31P1802, which serve the same role on the DS8700 and DS8800 respectively. IBM’s DS8000 family remains widely deployed in enterprise storage estates that have not migrated to a newer platform, and genuine device adapters are a routine requirement for restoring full redundancy after a failure.
