The IBM 41L5233 is a 2-Port Multiprotocol PCI adapter for RS/6000 and pSeries systems, closely related to FRU 41L5235 from the same part-number family. The adapter provides two independent WAN-capable serial ports supporting X.21, V.35, RS-232 and RS-449 interfaces at speeds up to 1.544Mbps over HDLC, connecting externally via a CSU/DSU or a synchronous modem, and was IBM’s standard way of giving an RS/6000 or pSeries server dedicated wide-area network connectivity before Ethernet-based WAN links became the default. It fits the PCI slot of the host system and is configured through AIX’s own multiprotocol adapter support.
