The IBM 44V8580 is a SAS 3Gbps dual-port PCI Express adapter from IBM’s CADET-E family, also cross-referenced under the equivalent FRU numbers 46K4732 and 46K5840. The CADET-E family covers PCIe dual-x4 SAS adapters at 3Gb/s speeds, available in both full-height (feature 5901) and low-profile (feature 5278) form factors, and this card provides the SAS/SATA host connectivity that lets a Power Systems or System x server attach external or internal SAS/SATA storage without needing a separate RAID enclosure controller. Its dual-port design supports either a single higher-throughput connection or two independent SAS/SATA paths for redundancy, depending on how the host system is cabled. Genuine CADET-E adapters remain a routine requirement for expanding storage connectivity on servers of this generation or replacing a failed controller card.
