The IBM 73Y4642 is recorded as a mainframe assembly supplied with its MCM, under the internal name Helix. The multi chip module is the ceramic package at the centre of a System z processor book: several processor and cache chips mounted on a single substrate, cooled directly and not separable from it in the field. A part supplied with the MCM is therefore the expensive half of a processor book. Machine type, model and capacity setting all bear on whether a given module can be used, so confirm those with us first.

Machines of this class are maintained at field replaceable unit level. A frame holds a central electronics complex of processor books and memory, I/O drawers carrying the channel and network adapters, a bulk power subsystem and its own cooling. Engineers replace the failing unit rather than the machine, which is why individual assemblies from the z9, z10, z196 and zEC12 generations and their equivalent Power frames still trade actively years after those systems shipped.
