The IBM 73Y9621 is a distributed converter assembly, catalogued on our record as DCA_MR. A DCA is the point of load power supply used in IBM mainframe and large Power frames: bulk power arrives in the frame at a high DC voltage and each DCA steps it down to the rails a processor book, memory card or I/O drawer actually needs, with enough redundancy to keep the drawer up if one converter fails. DCAs are specific to the drawer type and the machine generation they serve, so the suffix on the label matters as much as the part number itself.

IBM builds its large frame systems, the System z mainframes and the high end Power servers that share their packaging, around a bulk power subsystem rather than around individual power supplies. Mains comes in at the bulk power enclosure, is regulated and controlled there, and is distributed through the frame to converter assemblies at each book and drawer. Blowers, motor drive assemblies and, on the liquid cooled models, refrigeration or water cooling units hold the processor complex in its thermal envelope. Every one of those is a field replaceable unit.
