The IBM 74Y9480 is an Enclosure Services Manager (ESM) module for the IBM 5877 disk drive expansion enclosure, a storage-enclosure controller canister. The ESM manages drive presence detection, enclosure environmental monitoring and the SAS fabric path between the enclosure’s disk bays and the host system’s storage adapter, and enclosures of this kind are normally fitted with a pair of ESMs for redundancy.

A failed ESM can cause loss of a redundant storage path or, in a non-redundant configuration, loss of access to the enclosure’s drives, so it is treated as a routine hot-swap replacement part rather than something repaired in place.
