The Brocade (Foundry) NI-MLX-MR is a genuine NetIron MLX Series management module, providing the control-plane and out-of-band management functions for Brocade MLX-4, MLX-8, MLX-16 and MLX-32 core routers. It is fitted with 1GB of ECC memory, dual PCMCIA slots for boot/configuration media, an EIA/TIA-232 (RS-232) serial console port and a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port for dedicated out-of-band management access. As the management module for a modular chassis router rather than a stand-alone appliance, the NI-MLX-MR handles system-level functions such as configuration, routing protocol control and chassis health monitoring, working alongside separate switch fabric and line card modules to form the complete router. MLX Series routers were widely deployed as core and edge routers in service provider and large enterprise networks, valued for high port density and wire-speed forwarding, and the management module is a common field-replaceable item when a chassis loses management connectivity while its line cards and fabric continue to pass traffic. Although the NetIron MLX platform has reached official end-of-life and end-of-support, MLX chassis remain in service in many networks and this module is a standard like-for-like replacement or spares-holding part.
