The HP 381730-001 is a 4Gb short-wave Fibre Channel SFP transceiver supplied as a single unit. It is a hot-pluggable optical module with an LC duplex connector, operating over multimode fibre and auto-negotiating down to 2Gb and 1Gb so it drops into mixed-speed fabrics without reconfiguration. The transceiver seats in the SFP cage of a Fibre Channel switch, host bus adapter or storage controller and converts the electrical signal to optics for the fabric link, making it a routine consumable when adding ports, replacing a failed optic or extending an existing SAN.

Short-wave optics of this type are specified for in-rack and intra-data-centre runs on multimode cable. This part dates from HP’s StorageWorks range of the mid-2000s, after the 2002 Compaq merger, so it is occasionally listed under the older Compaq name.
