The Motorola SWRF9146E is a SURF (site RF combining) module for Motorola’s Horizon-family GSM base transceiver station (BTS) platform, built for the 900MHz band. It plugs into the BTS RF backplane and carries the combiner/duplexer function that merges the transmit output of two carrier transceiver units (CTUs) onto a shared antenna feed while duplexing the receive path, with a front-accessible DB9 serial port and an SMA connector for the transmit power amplifier output.

SURF cards were used across Motorola’s Horizon macro, Horizon II and M-Cell GSM base station families deployed widely through the 1990s and 2000s for 900MHz and 1800MHz GSM networks. Combining RF paths at the site level let operators run more carriers per antenna without adding feeder runs, a common requirement as GSM networks were built out and later re-farmed.
